importance of relationship with God

What if you can’t have a relationship with God while treating it as a religion?

We “talk” relationship but we “live” religion, with unsatisfying results. Christianity defines itself, first and foremost, as a relationship with God. Even though this is true, our human nature tends toward living a relationship with God as if it were a religion. In the book, “Is God Religious?” I build a case for a life focused upon an intimate relationship with God; what it is, what it looks like, how to get there, and the life changing results. A life focused on good behavior [religion] is essentially a life of self-focus, which is ultimately self-defeating as a substitute for actually knowing God. This book brings freedom from the bondage of critical self-judgment and the tyranny of living under a performance orientation toward God.

What makes this book unique is that it is written in two voices, one theological and one deeply personal. The personal voice cannot escape its nature. I was born with an irrepressible sense of humor – “there must be a laugh around here somewhere!” The tone of the book is light and humorous but often, profound. Given the subject matter, it shouldn’t work, but it does. My journey out from under religion into a joyous relationship with God was a matter of survival for me. My story is compelling because it is the “proof in the pudding” for the theology set forth.

The material set out in this book has a track record of transformed lives. It has been road tested over the last 30 years. It is written for those whose faith has not developed beyond rituals and rules, and hence has not lived up to the promise of “abundant life”. The book succeeds in facilitating a lifestyle of intimacy with the source of perfect love which brings transformation through that love. To truly know God is to be changed into His likeness.

The book is divided into 29 chapters and one very short final chapter. It is 302 pages long and includes reflection and discussion questions at the end of every chapter.
